Kamreigh Carpenter
Kamreigh, who is a sweet and loving 5 year old was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a form of brain cancer in kids, in late March of this year. She was having consistent headaches and her mom took her to the ER, where they found a lemon sized tumor on her brain. She was rushed to Golisanos in Syracuse for brain surgery. That initial surgery lasted for 8 hours. The family was told that the entire tumor was removed and that they were going to form a treatment plan to move forward. Her mom wanted a second opinion and reached out to St. Jude’s, and they were accepted just a day later. Upon arrival at St. Jude’s, the doctors there discovered that more than half of her tumor was still there and she would need to have another brain surgery before she could start any form of treatment. They also discovered that part of her skull was missing, as it was not put back from the initial surgery, and they had to replace that with titanium mesh. This next surgery lasted for 10 hours and the doctors in Tennessee were able to get 98% of the tumor. After surgery, Kams team of doctors formed a treatment plan that started with six weeks of radiation, with a month off, and then back to St. Jude’s for chemo, that will last until December.
While St. Jude’s is a remarkable facility and covers the cost of all of her treatment, she has three other siblings who need support as well. As soon as Kamreigh was diagnosed, her mom and dad have not left her side, and continue to be with her every step of the way. Her siblings have been staying with their grandparents, who have been a huge support during this difficult time. Kamreigh and her parents were able to get a sense of normalcy during the month of July and spend some quality time with the rest of their family. They are currently back at St. Jude’s to start her chemo treatment plan. We know that there is still a long road ahead for everyone, especially Kam, and we appreciate any and all support.
